The Chemist

In this gripping page-turner, an ex-agent on the run from her former employers must take one more case to clear her name and save her life.

She used to work for the U.S. government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning.

Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon. When her former handler offers her a way out, she realizes it's her only chance to erase the giant target on her back. But it means taking one last job for her ex-employers.

To her horror, the information she acquires only makes her situation more dangerous. Resolving to meet the threat head-on, she prepares for the toughest fight of her life but finds herself falling for a man who can only complicate her likelihood of survival. As she sees her choices being rapidly whittled down, she must apply her unique talents in ways she never dreamed of.

In this tautly plotted novel, Meyer creates a fierce and fascinating new heroine with a very specialized skill set. And she shows once again why she's one of the world's bestselling authors.

I liked the story, and the book probably deserves 3.5 stars! I just wish I hadn't known anything about the author. Knowing that this was written by Stephenie Meyer, author of the young adult Twilight series, made an impact on my evaluation of the plot and tainted my perspective of this new work. I kept "Twilight-spotting" and seeing similarities either real or imagined in the novel.

Dogs play a big part in this story (vs. wolves in Twilight), the lead female character Alex kept pushing away the male character Daniel because she feels she isn't good for him (romantic twist of Edward pushing Bella away because he is a vampire), Alex and Daniel were inexplicably drawn to one another (like Edward and Bella in Twilight), etc. I could go on and on and give additional examples. I kept waiting for Jacob to appear, and maybe I slightly see Jacob in Daniel's loving and warm personality. But I don't need to go down that rabbit hole... The bottom line is that I recognize my reading of the Twilight series colored my judgment of this stand-alone work by the same author. This book is NOT Twilight. There isn't anything remotely supernatural about the characters or the experiences they encounter, and the similarities I found are probably just my attempt to find connections back to the other series.

This isn't award-winning fiction, but it is a well-written book, and it kept my attention. Sure, it was pretty predictable. The plot twists and the characters' actions followed a bit of a formulaic script for these types of former-government-agent thrillers, but I still enjoyed the ride.

If the love story had been left out this would have been much, much better. The forced romance was ridiculous and boring.

Absolutely loved this book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a book with a good twist and mystery. A quick read with lots of action. Kept me on my toes, and even though a few parts were predictable; it still was a fun read.
