The Host

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading soul who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves -- Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

I have enjoyed all of Stephenie Meyer's books so far, but I think this one is probably the best one and most unique storyline.

EXCELLENT!!!! I really loved this. I am so very impressed with Stephenie Meyer now. I think The Host is even better than the Twilight series, and that had me completely addicted. There are definite parallels, Meyer's writing style is unmistakable, but this story is like nothing I've ever read. Amazing.

I'm shocked to report that I very much enjoyed this book. True, I'm always a sucker for post-apocalyptic novels; but this one also explores another favorite idea of mine, that any body-snatching aliens will fall so in love with being human that they just go native in the end. (Our pain is even more overwhelming than our booze and smallpox :) Yes, there is much sappy romance, but I'm not opposed to that, and the writing is good. (She got extra points from me for correctly using "effect" as a verb.) I will likely give the movie a miss, but the book is most definitely a good read.

Update 10/21/16: As an audiobook read by one of my favorite voices, Kate Reading, this is currently making me very happy as my get-to-sleep book. And it is still a good piece; far superior to that other thing Ms. Meyer wrote.
