One of Us Is Back (ONE OF US IS LYING)

The global phenomenon returns with the third book in the One of Us Is Lying series, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen M. McManus. When someone from the Bayview Four's past resurfaces, history begins to repeat itself--and the consequences are deadly.
The third time's a charm.
It's been almost two years since Simon died in detention, and the aftermath has been hard to shake. First the Bayview Four had to prove they weren't killers. Then a new generation outwitted a vengeful copycat. Now the entire Bayview Crew is back home for the summer, and everyone is trying to move on. Only, this is Bayview, and life is never that simple. At first the mysterious billboard seems like a bad joke: Time for a new game, Bayview. But when a member of the Bayview Crew disappears, it's clear this "game" is serious--and whoever's in charge isn't sharing the rules. Or maybe there aren't any. Bronwyn. Cooper. Addy. Nate. Maeve. Phoebe. Knox. Luis. Kris. Everyone's a target. And now that someone unexpected has returned to Bayview, things could start getting deadly. The thing is, Simon was right about secrets--they all come out eventually. And Bayview has a lot it's still hiding.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, but i wish it had stayed as a one-off. Each successive book has gotten worse. This one had almost no plot, nothing really happens for the first third of the book, and then the twist involves a series of bit players who barely exist in the first 3/4 of the book, and then the last 1/4 is just a post hoc justification of said twist.
Some moments of it feel just patently ridiculous. The only 'thrilling' moment in the first 3/4 of the book involves Bronwyn going missing, and the whole crew loads into a car to frantically drive to rescue her just to find out that she.... broke her phone and got lost while hiking for fresh berries? A pretty cheap trick to insert drama, angst, and thrills that the narrative couldn't deliver
The main problem is that this book involves the main characters from both previous books, which is just too many characters to juggle, and none of them are handled well because of it. Also, a lot of weird cheesy fan-service moments with the relationships that loses what made those relationships compelling in the first place.
Side note for how weird it was to spend so much of the plot on redemption arcs for the shitty parents and friends of the first book, instead of using that time to... i don't know, give any of our main characters or relationships a compelling story.

Good wrap up of the series. Thought they could have given us a little more context when referring to previous books, given it’s been some time since we read it. 7/10
