One of Us Is Next: The Sequel to One of Us Is Lying

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - There's a new mystery to solve at Bayview High, and there's a whole new set of rules. The highly anticipated sequel to One of Us Is Lying!
Come on, Bayview, you know you've missed this.
A ton of copycat gossip apps have popped up since Simon died, but in the year since the Bayview four were cleared of his shocking death, no one's been able to fill the gossip void quite like he could. The problem is no one has the facts. Until now. This time it's not an app, though--it's a game. Truth or Dare. Phoebe's the first target. If you choose not to play, it's a truth. And hers is dark. Then comes Maeve and she should know better--always choose the dare. But by the time Knox is about to be tagged, things have gotten dangerous. The dares have become deadly, and if Maeve learned anything from Bronwyn last year, it's that they can't count on the police for help. Or protection. Simon's gone, but someone's determined to keep his legacy at Bayview High alive. And the rules have changed.
Fans of the hit thriller that started it all can watch the secrets of the Bayview Four be revealed in the One of Us is Lying TV series now streaming on NBC's Peacock!

“Who do you want to be? The guy who goes along or the guy who stands up? This is the time to decide.”
Going into this book, I didn't have many expectations. The first book, One of Us is Lying, wasn't a favorite of mine. I figured book 2 would be the same, but I chose to try it out with a buddy.
Plot: This book is after the aftermath of book 1. We follow new characters while having those from book 1 in it as well. A group of friends ends up in a dangerous mystery surrounding their town and the death of Simon. Someone is forcing the school to choose between Truth or Dare, eliciting secrets to come out that no one wanted to share.
It's between Phoebe, Maeve, and Knox to dig further to find out who is tormenting them...before something bad happens.
I loved this idea. Truth or Dare with a darkness to it. I won't say much, it is a mystery after all, but trust me it's a good idea. It's also mixed with the ever-loving teen angst and family drama.
Characters: We have Phoebe, Maeve, and Knox. Each person lives a complex life, which is written well into the story and mysterious plot. They all became a tighter group while on the hunt for this mysterious game leader.
I wasn't too fond of Phoebe. She just didn't stick out to me, though I did enjoy reading a few of her POV's. Maeve I ADORED! Something about her I just stuck with and couldn't wait to get to her POV chapters. I needed to know more about her secrets, life, and family. Knox is just plain sweet. I mean, he's friends with his ex still. He's soft and isn't one to shy away from societies views of men; he is open and emotional. I love it.
The downside about this is how many characters there is. Like I mentioned, we also have scenes with the characters from book 1, these characters, side characters...It was a lot to remember! A few times I had no idea what was going on because it was confusing to stay on top of them all.
The mystery aspect: I have read darker mysteries/thrillers so this was pretty light for me. This is more focused on the characters and their lives while dealing with this anonymous person. The end, the big reveal, was written fairly well. I wasn't sure if I loved the result and big reveal but it still is good. It's just one of those, for me, that didn't entirely make sense.
End result: it was a great book. I loved every minute of it, was cheering characters on, and was invested in figuring out the mystery. Not dark for me, but it was enjoyable altogether.
As I mentioned above, Owen being the instigator threw me off. I just didn't feel like there was a lot of action from him that indicated it was him. But that's a personal thing, maybe. I'm tough on those twists at the end.

I forgot to add this book while reading - but alas. — I got the audio from the Publishers reviewer app as soon as it was added.
I really enjoyed this. I figured out WHO pretty early on, but unraveling the WHY was just as fun.
Full RTC.
(Big thanks to Penguin audio for the opportunity to read/listen and review.)

Enjoyed! It is kind of slow at the beginning but I wasn’t expecting the ending and everything tying together like that! Cant wait for the final book to come out July 25 of this year!
