The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out in this chilling YA psychological thriller and modern take on the classic haunted house story from New York Times bestselling author Tiffany D. Jackson!

Marigold is running from ghosts. The phantoms of her old life keep haunting her, but a move with her newly blended family from their small California beach town to the embattled Midwestern city of Cedarville might be the fresh start she needs. Her mom has accepted a new job with the Sterling Foundation that comes with a free house, one that Mari now has to share with her bratty ten-year-old stepsister, Piper.

The renovated picture-perfect home on Maple Street, sitting between dilapidated houses, surrounded by wary neighbors has its . . . secrets. That's only half the problem: household items vanish, doors open on their own, lights turn off, shadows walk past rooms, voices can be heard in the walls, and there's a foul smell seeping through the vents only Mari seems to notice. Worse: Piper keeps talking about a friend who wants Mari gone.

But "running from ghosts" is just a metaphor, right?

As the house closes in, Mari learns that the danger isn't limited to Maple Street. Cedarville has its secrets, too. And secrets always find their way through the cracks.

I was expecting more, this was suspense and not much else, but half way through you can speculate pretty quickly the ending. Also we are kept in suspense for this huge secret to be revealed, the secret that caused the entire family to be uprooted in the first place and it was not the serious, at least not to me. It was good but I wanted more

Spoiler Free Audiobook Review • Wow. Y’all I loved this book! Tiffany Jackson took social commentary in fiction to the next level with this one. We have the dynamic of a blended multi-racial family, mental health illness including anxiety and addiction, racism, gentrification, incarceration, and media bias just to name a few 👀 She weaved all of these important issues into a creepy-as-hell haunted house story where nothing felt forced. • I think having this told from Mari’s point of view was an excellent choice and the narrator did an amazing job bringing her to life. I’ve seen criticisms for some of the decisions made and how certain topics were presented, but I found it very realistic for a girl her age and I think that perspective is important, especially for adult readers that interact with teenagers. It was YA without being childish which I love. • I felt so many emotions for these characters and I love how the POV influenced my feelings. I wanted to beat Piper and shake Mari’s mom one minute, before remembering how different the same situation can look to a parent vs. their child vs. a sibling. And don’t even get me started on how much I love Sammy🖤 • I thought everything came together really well as things moved along, with the tension building the entire time. The ending seems to be the most divisive thing for readers and I get it, but I have no complaints. Yes it’s abrupt and no it doesn’t answer the questions I had, but that’s okay. We saw Mari’s growth from a teenager to an adult and that’s where the focus deserved to be. Of course, it does leave things open to a sequel which I would love to see🙌
