The Wise Man's Fear

Discover book two of Patrick Rothfuss' #1 New York Times-bestselling epic fantasy series, The Kingkiller Chronicle.
"I just love the world of Patrick Rothfuss." --Lin-Manuel Miranda DAY TWO: THE WISE MAN'S FEAR "There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man." My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view--a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man's Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, an escalating rivalry with a powerful member of the nobility forces Kvothe to leave the University and seek his fortune abroad. Adrift, penniless, and alone, he travels to Vintas, where he quickly becomes entangled in the politics of courtly society. While attempting to curry favor with a powerful noble, Kvothe uncovers an assassination attempt, comes into conflict with a rival arcanist, and leads a group of mercenaries into the wild, in an attempt to solve the mystery of who (or what) is waylaying travelers on the King's Road. All the while, Kvothe searches for answers, attempting to uncover the truth about the mysterious Amyr, the Chandrian, and the death of his parents. In The Wise Man's Fear, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

95% of this tome was read in 2021 but seeing I’ve now set myself a challenge of 48 books this year it’s fortuitous that I completed this in 2022.
I loved this book - even more than the first. Is it materially any better? Probably not but I am familiar with the world now and hungry for more of Kvothe’s story. I also have accepted the pace of the book - it’s the meanderings of someone’s life. Slowly told, unfurling and the good / bad and ugly told in the same way.
I really appreciate the immersion into a completely different world. It’s incredibly absorbing and yes I’m now hooked. Have officially joined the rabid crew waiting for the next instalment.

Loved this book. Found the characters and the world so well described and very rich in detail. Imaginative storyline, lots of intrigue and wonderful writing
Patrick Rothfuss is a literary genius. His books are like finding a good champagne: such a treat to crack one open and an absolute thrill to consume! You might be able to tell that I relished this second book of the Kingkilller Chronicles. The story continues just as you would hope: with Kvothe’s second day of recounting his life-story to the Chronicler. There are plenty more fantastic accounts from his days at university and then his adventure continues on further afield.
The only part of this book that lacked the Rothfuss charm were the chapters Kvothe spends with Felurian in the world of the Fae. It reminded me of the chapter in The Wind In The Willows where Mole and Ratty meet Pan - I am always tempted to skip over this section as it is a little weird and dream-like.
I may have written this in my review of the first book, but if you enjoy epic fantasies this one a must-read! Add it to your list and save it for a special occasion!
P.s. don’t buy the mass-market paperback from Amazon. The ink used has not set properly so every page smudges under your fingers like old-fashioned newspaper print - it is most disagreeable!

This picks up where The Name of The Wind leaves off. You continue to hear the tale of Kvote, with yet ANOTHER twist at the end you don't see coming.
