DAY ONE: THE NAME OF THE WIND My name is Kvothe.
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
You may have heard of me. So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature--the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Such good story with captivating characters
A fun tale told in retrospect with plenty of sorrow, joy, and sarcasm. Plenty of burning questions to keep you reading. Can't wait to read the next book.
This is an exceedingly well-written, epic fantasy which slowly, and in great and beautiful detail, recounts the life of an exceptional man who has answered to many names. Told from his perspective, the reader learns of all the experiences, relationships and hardships that befall Kvothe. From his short-lived, happy origins in a travelling troupe of performers, we follow Kvothe through life on the streets to his years at university which are full of “music and magic. Triumph and folly”. Patrick Rothfuss is a true wordsmith. His attention to detail is remarkable. I loved that he invents idioms in his made-up languages and cleverly reveals them as his characters discuss their translations. I also especially enjoyed the little lines of humour inserted amongst his fairly heavy and serious narrative. My only real peeve is the map of “The Four Corners of Civilization” printed at the beginning of the book: only a small percentage of places referenced in the book are marked on the map so I had trouble following Kvothe’s journey as I read along. If you have enjoyed other epic fantasy tales such as The Lord of the Rings and Brent Weeks’ Night Angel Trilogy, then I believe this will not disappoint.
One of my favorites. Such an easy read and it had me wanting more. I will reread this book probably many times over. I cried and laughed. I felt the loneliness. Very well written.
Wonderful read - took a little while to get into it. But such good writing and loved the detail of this fantasy world and its characters.
