This book surprised me. I was worried, about 20% in, that the book was going to be too outlandish and unbelievable to be good. At some point around 70% I was suddenly worried the ending would be boring and not nearly exciting enough for the build up. Luckily, everything comes together at the end and the ending is both surprising and twisted. I like how the twists were multifaceted and layered so that you couldn't even tell they were there. After what you think is the last twist, there's more. BOTM introduced me to this author and I am currently searching for more of her work. I want to record somewhere that there is a good boy (doggo) in this story and when pups are involved I am always worried something may happen to them, I am happy to say that this good boy is safe through the whole book even if the narration makes you think otherwise.
This was my first thriller novel.
I found it beautifully written with smooth transitions. The characters were all selfish and unbearable people. I had never heard on face blindness until this book. It was a unique concept with a creepy yet remorseful feeling behind it (until the end). The mild suspense had me intrigued by the entanglement of their past. This book was full of twists I never expected, especially the very end.
Spoiler Alert:
I still don't understand how Adam didn't realize he was being stalked and played by Amelia. Then goes and married her right after. He never tried to get Robin back. Although Robin's father was evil (or was he?) I do think if she had been honest about it, it could have made her marriage stronger with that connection.
The letters written every anniversary never lead me to believe they weren't written by Amelia. I never saw it coming and loved the twist.
Robin is wild for planning such a genius and detailed revenge on Adam and Amelia. I don't blame her for being upset but she did go a bit far.
Were there voices in the cellar calling to Amelia or by the lake whispering to the PI?
Robin's father claimed he made it all up to scare tourists away from his hideaway.
The ending was so wicked. The PI found out Amelia's past. She had been stalking Adam his entire life ever since they were preteens living on the same street stealing cars. The whole book you hear about Adam having nightmares of watching his mother get hit by a car in the street. How guilty he felt because she was only out there to walk to dog, his dog. In the last few pages you discover the car that hit his mother was none other than a car him and preteen Amelia carjacked... and Adam was driving.

I'm am genuinely, surprisingly shocked! I really disliked Alice Feeny's "Sometimes I Lie" and wrote her off an an author, but she kicked my butt in the best way with this book! I didn't guess the plot at all and caught myself saying "Whaaaaat" a few times! Don't think I'll read more of her books, but this one is a star!
