Fabulous book - liked by all for storyline, literary content & characters. Timing was perfect! Read for Halloween & put us in the “spirit” 👻
We find our protagonist Daisy as she is approaching her Nana's house to celebrate her Nana's 80th birthday. We find out that a long ago premonition told Nana she would not live past 80, so her entire family is anticipating this birthday. Everyone seems very interested in what their inheritance will be. Nana lives on a very secluded island, so secluded it is only accessible during low tide, and you have to walk across what is essentially a sandbar to get to it. Seaglass, Daisy's refuge, has passed through the matriarchal line in the Darker family and will continue to do so upon Nana's passing.
Daisy's life has been tough, diagnosed with a heart condition at the age of five, she was treated like a porcelain doll. Never allowed to socialize or make friends, not even allowed to go to a normal school. Her two sisters, Rose and Lily were given far more freedom and Daisy feels that her parents always loved them more. Nana and Daisy had a very special relationship as Daisy spent a lot of time at Seaglass when her mother was busy, or at times with her mother when her mother was burnt out on life.
We follow the family through Halloween night, into the early hours of the next morning as one by one they are picked off by someone or something. The present chapters are intertwined with chapters from the past, Daisy's point of view, about different memories from her childhood. I can't say much more about what happens for fear of giving away any clue of the twists.
I was very glad to find that two of this book's main characters were a grandma and her granddaughter. My granny was the most important person in the world to me. She raised me, she molded me, she gave me my morals and my values, and even though it's been 15 years since she passed I still think of her everyday. I love to read a good story about a grandma and her granddaughter and their relationship.
So, this one totally threw me for a loop towards the end. I was almost positive I knew what the twist would be and I wasn't even close. And then there was another twist, and another. Twist after twist after twist. I am astounded at this author's ability to add in enough false flags without making it obvious. The last one I read from Feeney was Rock Paper Scissors and that one was very similar in the twist out of left field. This author has gone on my auto buy list, and I am currently searching out the rest of her books as we speak. 100/10 recommend to lovers of mysteries, thrillers, even a little bit of the paranormal in here.
