I think this is perhaps my 6th Neil Gaiman book. This had some serious vibes that kept making me nostalgic for Gaiman's own Anansi Boys or the BBC's Dr. Who. I liked it, though it sometimes veered into wth is happening territory. As many reviewers suggested, the London setting brings the book to life. I'm going to try to watch the show. PS. My copy had a chapter at the end about the Marquis coat that I wish I'd skipped, especially since I don't think it was included in the 90s edition. PPS As I was trying to sleep, it occurred to me that the book tackles the question of what is a meaningful life and why. I think Gaiman answers insightfully. Update: The TV show has big Labyrinth-are-we-dreaming-vibes.

I've really trudged through this book over the last few months. I stuck with it because I was curious to see where the plot was going. I usually love fantasy, but this novel just didn't quite do it for me. It has been compared to Alice in Wonderland, which is perhaps why: I never liked that story, or its characters very much. Equally, with Neverwhere, the synopsis sounded great, but I was put off largely by the characters who were often ridiculous in a non-enjoyable, over-the-top way. Additionally, I thought the idea of turning London tube station names into characters and places was just quite silly. I also guessed the plot twist quite early on which can been a spoiler. It was a shame, as I always start out very excited for a book and all it promises and I do wish I had enjoyed it more.

My favorite Gaiman work. Incredible nuanced commentary on social outcasting, and vividly illustrated with Neil’s command of language. Emotional, daunting, and magical.
