Just Like Home

Just Like Home is a darkly gothic thriller from nationally bestselling author Sarah Gailey, perfect for fans of Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House as well as HBO's true crime masterpiece I'll Be Gone in the Dark.
"Come home." Vera's mother called and Vera obeyed. In spite of their long estrangement, in spite of the memories -- she's come back to the home of a serial killer. Back to face the love she had for her father and the bodies he buried there, beneath the house he'd built for his family. Coming home is hard enough for Vera, and to make things worse, she and her mother aren't alone. A parasitic artist has moved into the guest house out back and is slowly stripping Vera's childhood for spare parts. He insists that he isn't the one leaving notes around the house in her father's handwriting... but who else could it possibly be? There are secrets yet undiscovered in the foundations of the notorious Crowder House. Vera must face them and find out for herself just how deep the rot goes.BUY THE BOOK

Fucking no notes. This book is unhinged. It manages to take a tired and a bit… silly concept and make it visceral. Stunning. Vera comes home—to the house her father made and needs to figure out if her mother is her only problem. This is a story about abuse and darkness and love in a very beautiful and victorious way. Love that consumes. Love that is so strong that it mutates. Man, Vera evolves and seems to come out of that basement—so fucking alive. WHOA. I enjoyed her other two books but this one? Fucked up and delightful. Read this if you love it when women rise from ashes; love fucked up women and gothic horror.
Seldom have I read a book this good. The beginning is so unassuming. A woman goes back to the house she grew up in because her mother is on her deathbed and she just so happens to be the daughter of a renowned serial killer. Seems so generic at first but already during Vera's first night back home the twists and turns start and never seem to stop. My heart was pounding through every flashback into Vera's childhood and the end was so surprising. I never saw it coming. I recommend everyone who likes a bit of gore and horror and a whole lot of thrills to read this.
the whole time I was reading, I could only think three words.... "what the fuck."
But like, in a good way. Deliciously creepy, does a great job of building the creeping dread up, atmospheric. I'll probably come back and leave a more thorough review once I've processed a bit more.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this one but even if I had tried to predict it, I would have failed miserably. I enjoyed reading this book, the plot was intriguing and it was well written. It just wasn't what I wanted and as a result, it took me out of the experience a little bit. Still worth a read if you're looking for a good haunted house story with twists you can't predict!
