Heartless

From Marissa Meyer, the #1 New York Times-bestselling story of Wonderland's most notorious villain: the Queen of Hearts.
Long before she was the terror of Wonderland--the infamous Queen of Hearts--she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen. Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans. In Heartless, her first stand-alone teen novel, the New York Times-bestselling author of the Lunar Chronicles dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The audiobook narration was amazing, but I almost DNF'd it several times and now that I've finished it I wish I had. It was teetering at 'meh' plot-wise and character-wise for most of the book but the narrator and writing style were enjoyable so I trudged through it anyway. Unfortunately the plot/characters did not improve.
It pains me to write this review, because Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite stories, and I love reading inspirational works about it. I was looking forward to the becoming of The Queen of Hearts and Marissa Meyer had a good idea about it... That totally flopped.
Let me tell you: This book is repetitive, boring, uncreative, straight up rips up lines from Alice in Wonderland to fill the pages and repeats them,
over,
and over,
again just
like,
this.
It's 450 pages and about 300 of those are filler and repetitive words, cliches, repeated poems and ideas. Nothing new was brought into the story, the characters sometimes talked like they do in the original Alice in Wonderland and other times they were so flat and dull. Some of the descriptions on the books made no sense at all, and sometimes you could skip 3 pages and its just Meyer going on and on about nothing.
Jest is confusing, is he a tall, handsome, warrior? Or is he a skinny and small court Joker. I don't get it? Why does Meyer keep switching around the description of the characters. Then, she introduces so many characters at once I have no idea who is who or what they look like, it doesn't help they all talk alike.
I haven't read any of her other work, so I can't make comments on how this author is overall. I'm disappointed to have found this book so boring and draggy, because I don't think I could pick up another book by this author if its the same thing.
Really didn't like this one, it took so long to finish for such a small book.

I have mixed opinions of this book. The story was very immersive and captivating. I felt like I was in the world of the story but the romance focused on in the beginning was a bit boring and mediocre. Since this plot is very important it was annoying to read through in the beginning but I definitely think that changes later on.
Sooooooooooo good but the ending....is not what I expected at all...could not sleep cause I kept thinking about it. WHY MUST THE BOOK BE SO GODDAMN GOOD BUT SUDDENLY GOT SAD ENDING? I WAS HEARTBROKEN 😭
