Wishin' and Hopin': A Novel

Wally Lamb, the beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Hour I First Believed, I Know This Much Is True, and She's Come Undone, delivers a holiday treat with Wishin' and Hopin'--an unforgettable novella that captures the warmth and joy of the holiday season. Poignant and hilarious, in a vein similar to Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story and David Sedaris's The Santaland Diaries, Lamb's Christmas tale focuses on a feisty parochial school fifth grader named Felix Funicello--a distant cousin of the iconic Annette!

Wally Lamb wrote two of my favorite books of all time:

For this reason, he could follow with fifty POS books, and I'd still put him as a favorite author. Now I'm not saying this was a POS, but it felt as if I was reading a completely different author.
Wishin' and Hopin' is set in the 1960s and told through the eyes of ten-year-old Felix Funicello. He is smart and funny but also naive (as a ten-year-old should be). He is also the smallest in his class (of course). One reviewer nailed it by saying that it is a cross between A Christmas Story and TheWorst Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Except it's not as good as either one. I read this trying to get into the Christmas spirit, but unfortunately it wasn't as focused on Christmas as I anticipated.
This is a short, quick read but not necessarily one I would recommend.
