I cannot believe I finished this one. 897 pages of first person (which is not my favorite style of writing). I will admit I was hooked by page 100, and by page 500 I still wanted to hang in there and read the ending. The author weaves a grandfather's memoir into the second half of the book and this really adds depth to the story. It is tragic in many ways, but also presents mental illness (and psychotherapy) in a way that is sympathetic and easy to understand. I'm glad I read it, but not rating it too high because frankly its just too damn long. Author is (obviously) not economical with words so you end up with a story told in over 800 pages but probably would have been better if it was told more succinctly in 500 pages or less.
