Almost 3 stars for this period mystery, and so I chose to round up! This was a predictable story with a rather arrogant detective who I disliked almost from the first chapter. I guess this book proves that you don’t have to like all the characters or even the lead character to be entertained. I liked the other characters like the detective’s faithful companion Woods, the young maid Anna and tough farmer Jethro Hamilton. I found these characters somewhat charming and amusing, which slightly redeemed the trite storyline and the jerk of a protagonist.
