Jeannette Walls' parents loved their children, but were not particularly interested in parenting. The memoir covers Walls's unconventional upbringing and her complicated relationship with her parents who she loves, but understandably resents as well. Reminded me of Educated, but without the religious fundamentalism.
This was a painful read. Having grown up in chaos and filth, and being almost 70 years old with a loving husband of almost 40 years, it was wasted time for me. I would rather focus on what is good in my life, not read about about horrible, neglectful and completely selfish parents who are somehow being forgiven for stealing from their children, withholding food and hiding a million dollar property that could have been used to provide nutrition and stability for four extremely neglected and abused children. Sorry Jeannette Walls, but child abuse is unforgivable. As an older woman, I do not want to relive what I worked so hard on, being rid of my abusers, to live a better and happier life.
