Six of Crows (Six of Crows, 1)

The next electrifying novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author duo behind The Wife Between Us.

"Propulsive and thrilling....A page-turner that will keep you guessing until the very end." --Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Malibu Rising

Wealthy Washington suburbanites Marissa and Matthew Bishop seem to have it all--until Marissa is unfaithful. Beneath their veneer of perfection is a relationship riven by work and a lack of intimacy. She wants to repair things for the sake of their eight-year-old son and because she loves her husband. Enter Avery Chambers.

Avery is a therapist who lost her professional license. Still, it doesn't stop her from counseling those in crisis, though they have to adhere to her unorthodox methods. And the Bishops are desperate.
When they glide through Avery's door and Marissa reveals her infidelity, all three are set on a collision course. Because the biggest secrets in the room are still hidden, and it's no longer simply a marriage that's in danger.

"An utterly compelling, spellbinding read." --Lisa Jewell, author of Then She Was Gone and Invisible Girl

LISTENED to this one. Super good. It’s definitely PG-13 and I’m more of a rated R gal, but good story and lovable characters.

I give this book about 2.25 stars. Maybe 2.5. It was a 1 star for 75% of the book but I liked the final 25% enough to bump it up.

I have a lot of qualms with things in this book. I would like to note that I listened to the audiobook and it's possible the narration put me off. I also haven't read Shadow and Bone and am going to try reading that as a physical copy to see if I can get into the world that Bardugo has set up. I recognize it's a highly rated series and am not ready to give up on it.

Here are some of my qualms (Light spoilers from this part on).

1: Everyone seems to have skill-sets that don't line up well with their age. I have a hard time getting behind a band of teens being master criminals and being the right choice for this heist. I understand this is Young Adult, and maybe it wouldn't have bothered me when I was a teenager. However, I have read plenty of YA novels and felt that their skills were appropriate for their age.

2: I truly get frequently irritated by the dialogue that occurs between characters. Everyone is trying to be such a badass with words and it comes off sounding like little retorts you'd read in a fanfiction series. Nothing of what they say sounds remotely intimidating. The actions of gouging out someone's eyeball or making someone's heart explode is far more intimidating. If those kind of actions had been presented in the beginning, maybe I'd be more intimidated by these "master criminals". Instead they sound whiny.

3: The entire first half/three-quarters of the book is literally fluff. It's so dull. I almost DNF this book because of the beginning and middle. Nothing was interesting until black protocol during the heist. As if to prove how fluffy it is, if you go to the Grishaverse Wiki and read the synopsis for this book, the first half of the book takes like two paragraphs in total to summarize.

4: Too many points of view. Jesper really didn't need a point of view. I liked Jesper better when his actions were told from someone else's chapter. I feel like maybe Inej didn't need chapters either. She didn't seem to bear any weight in the story except to exist as a weakness for Kaz.

Things I did like:

1: I was pleasantly surprised at how Nina and Matthias' relationship matured. I was extremely irritated by them in the beginning, I thought their banter was petty and childish, and ended up shipping them pretty hard.

2: Nina. She was the only character who made sense to me. She had mystical powers and was deeply involved in her culture and had had dense training and was willing to put herself in harms way for the good of the team.

3. The actual heist was fun. I found myself surprised by some parts, repulsed by some parts, and actually enjoying this book for once. It kept up through to the end of the book. I was definitely surprised by Van Eck's betrayal on all accounts and was surprised at Kaz's wit.

We'll see how I feel when I read Shadow and Bone!

I didn’t think I would give this book such a high rating once I started reading it, but here I am! I haven’t read Shadow & Bone, so it was a learning curve I had to go through in the beginning. I didn’t understand the terminology and the world building was complicated but once I got through that and started to understand and get to know the characters better, I loved it! The heist alone deserves all the praise. That was what convinced me in the end. I urgently need to buy the next book tomorrow!!! Loved the six crows and anyone who knows my reading taste, knows I'm a sucker for found family. Shame on me that I didn’t read it sooner!

“Many boys will bring you flowers. But someday you'll meet a boy who will learn your favorite flower, your favorite song, your favorite sweet. And even if he is too poor to give you any of them, it won't matter because he will have taken the time to know you as no one else does. Only that boy earns your heart.” I really thought I would hate this book, that's why it had been on my shelf for 1.5 years. I just didn't really think I was going to be a fantasy person. Little did I know that I would love this book. It just wasn't 5 stars because there was just something about it that didn't make it complete or something. Maybe it was just because I was/is in a slump. I ship Kaz and Inej so much, I hope they get together in book 2. I need to let this book sink in before reading book 2.
