One by One

This instant New York Times bestseller and "claustrophobic spine-tingler" (People) from Ruth Ware follows a group of employees trapped on a snow-covered mountain.Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn't sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there's a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers...each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide. When the cofounder of Snoop, a trendy London-based tech start-up, organizes a weeklong trip for the team in the French Alps, it starts out as a corporate retreat like any other: presentations and strategy sessions broken up by mandatory bonding on the slopes. But as soon as one shareholder upends the agenda by pushing a lucrative but contentious buyout offer, tensions simmer and loyalties are tested. The storm brewing inside the chalet is no match for the one outside, however, and a devastating avalanche leaves the group cut off from all access to the outside world. Even worse, one Snooper hadn't made it back from the slopes when the avalanche hit. As each hour passes without any sign of rescue, panic mounts, the chalet grows colder, and the group dwindles further...one by one.

I'm a fan of Ruth Ware thrillers and once again I was not disappointed.

The premise was intriguing and the setting was lovely. Her switch in character perspectives throughout the book was well done, and aided in building the tension effectively. However, [slight spoilers] this did narrow down the killer to one of two people in the last stretch of the book, though I still felt the tension in spite of eventually knowing who the killer actually was. The last half of the book was difficult to put down because so much happened and you couldn't guess how it would end.

I felt that this book did give a bit more than a head nod to And Then There Were None, but with a more modern touch. I'm satisfied with how it ended and overall with the book itself.

Definitely would recommend it to fans of thrillers and Ruth Ware.

This was a fairly cozy mystery with several unlikable characters who were thrust upon the reader all at once. It took me a while to remember who everyone was, but I enjoyed the story and the alternating POV between two main characters. I loved the idea of the Snoop app, probably because I enjoy seeing what my friends are currently listening to on Spotify.I read this book in two sittings and while it wasn't wildly original, it was enjoyable.

This is definitely the best Ruth Ware I’ve read thus far aka the ending did not piss me off LOL.

But dang, Ruth loves having a character who has something about herself uncovered by another character for PLOT. At least in “One by One” it wasn’t as over the top as “Turn of the Key.”

If you like closed circle mysteries, characters with all kinds of motives, and dumb names, give it a try.

This is a great ski vacation read! What could go wrong in the Swiss Alps on a ski trip with young founders of a tech company?
