What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware's suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller.

Sometimes the only thing to fear...is yourself.

When reclusive writer Leonora is invited to the English countryside for a weekend away, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. But as the first night falls, revelations unfold among friends old and new, an unnerving memory shatters Leonora's reserve, and a haunting realization creeps in: the party is not alone in the woods.

I had no expectations going into this book, but I found that I was hooked after only a few pages, and the hook kept building and building. I ended up staying up half the night to finish the book all in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. It was intense and made me cry a bit, and I woke up this morning thinking about it still.

Leonora (Leo to one, Lee or Nora to others) gets invited to her former friend Clare's hen party at a house in the country, and she opts to say "yes" out of curiosity since she and Clare had lost touch a decade prior. It's a quirky gathering to be sure, and Nora is on edge almost immediately. And from there, the drama continues to build as the readers are dragged along as Nora struggles to remember what happened after her run through the woods.

This is a well-written first novel, and while I don't typically read bestsellers because I'm stubborn like that, I will be reading more by Ruth Ware, to be sure.

If you love fast paced, intriguing, edge of your seat thrillers with well fleshed out characters, twists and turns, and gripping narratives, don't pick this book up. This is probably the least thrilling thriller I've ever read in my life. Incredibly predictable, boring is all get out, and absolutely not worth my time.

I guessed whodunnit.
I never guess whodunnit.

I had high hopes for this and anticipated something much more thrilling. Instead I got a quite interesting beginning, an almost sluggish middle, and a mostly predictable ending. Not as riveting or memorable as I'd imagined.
