The unforgettable Newbery Medal-winning novel from Lois Lowry. As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen's family takes in Annemarie's best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.
Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.
A modern classic of historical fiction, Number the Stars has won generations of fans and continues to speak to today's readers. Jessica Grose wrote in a November 2022 New York Times essay entitled "This Perfect Mother-Daughter Read Holds a Powerful Lesson for Fighting Antisemitism" "Number the Stars is particularly relevant to our family, and to this moment."
As School Library Journal put it: "Readers are taken to the very heart of Annemarie's experience, and, through her eyes, come to understand the true meaning of bravery."
This is a classic for a reason. Beautiful story...

My favorite part is in the Afterward, from a letter by the real young man on whom Lowry based the character of Peter: ". . . and I want you all to remember—that you must not dream yourselves back to the times before the war, but the dream for you all, young and old, must be to create an ideal of human decency, and not a narrow-minded and prejudiced one. That is the great gift our country hungers for, something every little peasant boy can look forward to, and with pleasure feel he is a part of—something he can work and fight for." - Kim Malthe-Bruun

This book is about the struggles of living durning World War Two , it shows how Jewish people were treated differently than regular people that were not tall, blonde or had blue eyes. It follows the adventures of Annamarie trying to help with the resistance.

I haven't read this book since I was ten years old, but it brought back the seriousness of learning about the Holocaust while still being appropriate for a middle school reader. It discusses the gravity of "relocating" Jews from Denmark and is a wonderful book about empathy and bravery. It's a must-read, no matter what your age.

A sort of kinder, gentler Anne Frank told from a different faction. Very nice read.
