Although the premise is promising, in my opinion, the execution falls short. The writing style is often overly descriptive and filled with unnecessary tangents, which can slow down the pacing and detract from the overall narrative. The book also includes a significant amount of graphic violence, which may not be suitable for all readers and feels gratuitous at times.
Furthermore, the plot feels disjointed and lacks a clear sense of direction. The story jumps around in time and location, and it can be challenging to keep track of what is happening and why. While the novel attempts to incorporate elements of Southern Gothic, the execution feels forced and contrived, rather than natural and organic.
The lack of character development, convoluted plot, and excessive violence make for a forgettable and tedious reading experience.
