Maybe in Another Life: A Novel

One of our nation's most prominent writers finds the truth about how to live a long and happy life in the centenarian next door.

When a veteran Washington journalist moved to Kansas, he met a new neighbor who was more than a century old. Little did he know that he was beginning a long friendship--and a profound lesson in the meaning of life. Charlie White was no ordinary neighbor. Born before radio, Charlie lived long enough to use a smartphone. When a shocking tragedy interrupted his idyllic boyhood, Charlie mastered survival strategies that reflect thousands of years of human wisdom. Thus armored, Charlie's sense of adventure carried him on an epic journey across the continent, and later found him swinging across bandstands of the Jazz Age, racing aboard ambulances through Depression-era gangster wars, improvising techniques for early open-heart surgery, and cruising the Amazon as a guest of Peru's president.

David Von Drehle came to understand that Charlie's resilience and willingness to grow made this remarkable neighbor a master in the art of thriving through times of dramatic change. As a gift to his children, he set out to tell Charlie's secrets. The Book of Charlie is a gospel of grit--the inspiring story of one man's journey through a century of upheaval. The history that unfolds through Charlie's story reminds you that the United States has always been a divided nation, a questing nation, an inventive nation--a nation of Charlies in the rollercoaster pursuit of a good and meaningful life.

Quote 🗨️ : “When you sit there and wish things had happened differently, you can’t just wish away the bad stuff. You have to think about all the good stuff you might lose, too. Better just to stay in the now and focus on what you can do better in the future.” Liked ✅ - Sliding door feels - Besties FOR THE WIN - Amazing quotable parts - Unexpected ending Didn't Like ❌ - Lost me emotionally More in depth review at patreon.com/salinaandtanya

DNF at 50% - I had to keep forcing myself to try and pick this one up again, and at some point I had to give up

I was deeply disappointed by this book. I've loved all of the author's work so far - Malibu Rising, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and Daisy Jones and the Six were my top 3 books for this year (and I've read 90 so far) - so i was truly devastated by how deeply BORING this book was. The characters have no personality, just a collection of quirks the author keeps beating readers over the head with - I get it, the main character likes cinnamon rolls and wears a bun.

The two love interests were deeply boring as well, Ethan has no thoughts, opinions, or character trait other than being like... madly in love with a chick he dated a decade ago in high school, and Henry is just kind of.... funny.

I've never written a review, but this is now one of my favorite books. I'm very picky about what I read because of how it's written, but this was just incredible. I laughed. I got tears. I lost hope. I became hopeful. A must read.

Enjoyed the different approach by having two storylines. Was a nice change to the usual plot line.
