Blur caught my eye because not only is it a mystery, which is my new fancy, but I have heard great things about Steven James. I haven't read, and let's be honest- enjoyed, many books from a males POV either. But I loved it! Since this is a mystery, my review will be vague but the gist? Read this book.
We meet Daniel, the all-star athlete in his small town attending the funeral of a teenage girl who had died a week prior. Her death was ruled an accident, but after a (creepy) and unexpected turn of events, Daniel starts to believe that she was murdered. As his grasp on reality starts to slip, he sets off to uncover the clues about her death, with the help from his friends.awn O'Porter
AH, the writing! Just, amazing. I will say that this does start off rather slow, taking a good portion to really get into it. Looking back, I see why this was necessary though. Once things do take off? Hooked. The "blurred" scenes were probably my favorite. There were creepy, and added a flare to the mystery. There was one aspect of the mystery that I caught onto rather quickly, but the remaining parts of the novel I didn't. I was constantly pointing my finger at different characters. Admittedly, I was never right!
Daniel is a smart, sweet and likeable guy; he was such an interesting character. He questioned everything happening to him, and that just isn't something you see much in young adult. There were a few times he was being slightly over dramatic though. I honestly believe he handled everything going on rather well. A few things that he saw were just down right creepy and I am not sure I would have been able to handle it. Also, he was just a little too trusting.
My Peeve -
My only qualm was the slow start. I mentioned before, looking back I feel it was necessary to get a grasp on Daniel, his life and what exactly was going on in that head of his.
Overall -
I loved it! Blur is a masterfully crafted mystery that will keep you on your toes and guessing throughout the book. I am highly anticipating the sequel to this. I recommend it.
