I don't read too many murder mysteries/thrillers, but every once in a while I pick up one just to give my brain something new to ponder. This book was a debut novel offered free one week to Nook owners, and I downloaded it because I remembered hearing a lot about it when the third book came out. It seemed interesting enough, so into the Nook it went!

I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say that the prologue was jarring for me (in a good way; great writing, but I made the mistake of starting to read the novel while I was having dinner... and since I'm not accustomed to murder mystery, I was a little unprepared...). Ultimately, I like the character of Patrick Bowers, I enjoyed James's pacing throughout, and the slow unraveling of the stories. I didn't suspect the killer *at all* throughout the book, which made it all the more exciting for me to read.

The novel's conclusion is well written, quick-paced, and satisfying. I am contemplating picking up the second in the series.
