All the Dangerous Things: A Novel

Following up her instant New York Times bestseller, A Flicker in the Dark, Stacy Willingham delivers a totally gripping thriller about a desperate mother with a troubled past in All the Dangerous Things.

One year ago, Isabelle Drake's life changed forever: her toddler son, Mason, was taken out of his crib in the middle of the night while she and her husband were asleep in the next room. With little evidence and few leads for the police to chase, the case quickly went cold. However, Isabelle cannot rest until Mason is returned to her—literally.

Except for the occasional catnap or small blackout where she loses track of time, she hasn’t slept in a year.

Isabelle's entire existence now revolves around finding him, but she knows she can’t go on this way forever. In hopes of jarring loose a new witness or buried clue, she agrees to be interviewed by a true-crime podcaster—but his interest in Isabelle's past makes her nervous. His incessant questioning paired with her severe insomnia has brought up uncomfortable memories from her own childhood, making Isabelle start to doubt her recollection of the night of Mason’s disappearance, as well as second-guess who she can trust... including herself. But she is determined to figure out the truth no matter where it leads.

Content warning for death of a child, abuse, mental illness, murder, manipulation, and related topics. I liked this novel! It was more slow-burn than I typically prefer, but I thought it was really successful and told the story well. I liked the ending, I hadn't seen it coming. I also liked the sections about Isabelle's past, I thought they were woven in well and didn't detract from the rest of the story. I didn't really like Isabelle as a narrator, but I think that's because this is a psychological thriller that relies on the character doing things that she can't remember/feeling confused all the time.

Second 5 star book of the year! So well deserved; I literally had to pry my eyes off the pages and remind myself to breathe because this book was too good to put down. Right from the beginning, the author had me hooked. The plot was filled with twists and turns that constantly kept me guessing. And let me tell you, the culprit? The last person on my mind! I must admit, I'm used to unraveling mysteries halfway through, but this time, Willingham had me bamboozled the whole time. What sets this book apart is the brilliant interweaving of not just one, but three captivating mysteries. So unique yet fits so seamlessly into the story, just so we could understand the characters and where they were coming from. I felt everything: the gut-wrenching emotions, the relentless thrill, Isabelle's pain, and anxiety from her sleep-deprived state. I felt for her so deeply as she goes through the pain of losing her son. But... All this to find out in the author's note, that Stacy Willingham is not a mother??? I was utterly floored by the sheer talent and imagination behind this book. She is truly a gifted writer. I will go as far as to say that this was one of the best thrillers I have ever read.
