A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, 4)

A tender addition to the #1 New York Times bestselling Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas, bridging the events of A Court of Wings and Ruin and upcoming books.

Feyre, Rhysand, and their friends are still busy rebuilding the Night Court and the vastly altered world beyond, recovering from the war that changed everything. But Winter Solstice is finally approaching, and with it, the joy of a hard-earned reprieve.

Yet even the festive atmosphere can't keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, her concern for those dearest to her deepens. They have more wounds than she anticipated-scars that will have a far-reaching impact on the future of their court.
Bridging the events of A Court of Wings and Ruin with the later books in the series, A Court of Frost and Starlight explores the far-reaching effects of a devastating war and the fierce love between friends.

A quick read that gives a better look into the lives and thoughts and feelings of the other characters. I loved that!

The only thing that drove me insane is that not all the characters were written in 1st person… Feyre and Rhys are, but Morrigan isn’t??? It drove me nuts

This was an excellent epilogue to Feyre’s tale. I enjoyed all the varying perspectives which is something I’m not often fond of, so I found that surprising. But the perspective choices were made for a reason and after the three prior books, they are all characters we know and love dearly.

I loved seeing the transition of life pre/mid war to post war and seeing the realistic approach there. Things aren’t immediately okay after war. There is loss and anger and hurt to sort through but there is hope. Hope in the void.

A fantastic follow up to an amazing series.

I could be the only person on this planet that is so excited for more books from this series to come out. I adore these characters (really, Fayre and Rhy's--don't judge). So when I heard this was coming out and as a novella before book 4, I was so happy!

This follows after the Hyburn war. people have died, our characters had fought with a vengeance to protect their own, and no one is the same. they've gone through some pretty radical stuff in the last book and I was looking forward to seeing them in this way. I wasn't expecting this book to be lighter and sweet with a lack of troubles and impending doom.

Yet, there was still an underlying feeling of danger--the calm before the store, so to speak.

Fayre has come so far from that young girl in A Court of Thorns and Roses. she has grown up, defeated many, learned to protect her own, and has become a strong, real female warrior. she is in charge of people, having to protect them and stand up for what's right. I love how strong she is but still has moments of weakness--something I always appreciate in books, especially fantasy. there are some instances in this book that made her seem years older than what she really is and at the same time, scenes that show how youthful she truly is. I'm looking forward to reading about her in the coming books.

Rhy's.

the love of my life. I would do anything for this fae man. he's remained with me since the first book when I had not yet realized how important he was. He's still in my top 5 book boyfriend list! the thing about him is that he has a side that's comical and silly, rogueish and fun. On the other hand, in a split second, he can change. he can become a leader, a killer, a protector. something about that screams to me a hero of sorts. and he makes fayre happy. Which, let's be honest, something she really needs. In this book, he's not any different. He's loyal, fun, and serious when needs to be. he wants to help his people. and we learn some sweet things from his past.

These two together warm my black, frozen tundra of a heart.

We can't forget the others. Cassian still uses humor to deflect pain and tense situations and I adore him. Him and Nesta (oh, don't get me started on this girl!) are still at odds. I'm hoping--praying to the book gods--that they find their peace soon. Aziel is still a mystery. I'm not totally sure what's going on there and his love for Mor (who has yet to come out to anyone other than Feyre). I hope he gets something good coming his way, he deserves it. More is herself. We don't see much of her. Or Amren for that matter, but they aren't favorites anyway.

Nesta...

Give me strength. the next book is from her POV and Cassians (I assume just them). I'm hesitant because she bugs me. Like, big bug. Bigger than the biggest bug. Anyway...

I hope their story goes good but I have no doubt it will be, honestly.

elaine is adorable. she's still grieving her fiance (we didn't like him) and is slowly getting better. she lives with Fayre and everyone and is starting to cook and smile and ask questions more. I really adore this girl and hope she can soon get over her icky, dead fiance and get together with poor Lucien. He needs help.

The writing was beautiful as always. Maas has a way with words, she truly does, that speaks almost poetically. some quotes I really loved:

"Stars flicked around, sweet darkness sweeping in. As if we were the only souls in a galaxy."

"I think my heart knew you were mine long before I even realized it."

"To the blessed darkness from which we are born, and to which we return."

ugh, just beautiful! I could really just type half the book as quotes on here.

I love this series and I look forward to the next few that await!

It’s like this cozy breather after all the crazy stuff that went down. You get to hang out with the characters you love and see how they’re doing post-action. It’s all about healing and hope, and it really warms your heart. While it’s a bit slower, it sets the stage nicely for what’s coming next
