This is a true classic. The writing was funny and the characters were well drawn. Any time a writer gives a pet a full name with a title, I’m in! He also has a funny names for others that resonated with my East Texas sensibilities. Portis gave Mattie Ross a believable voice- though young, she was of one mind and purpose. I saw the original movie as a young girl and it stuck with me. I didn’t know I would enjoy the book so much. It read like a screenplay. I read it to my spouse orally and both us us were captivated. The Coen Brothers film changed some key scenes fundamentally and the climax was over way too fast for my taste but the actors we’re magnificent!

5 Wasn’t a chore but the lack of contractions ate away at me like a gang of musket-carrying snakes. Could have been more.

Girl's a little young, but, ya know, snake pits are cool.
