This story was brilliant. It was a mix of science and faith and often times people push heavy the notion that these ideas are two separate beings with no commonalities or relationship. Gyasi’s way of telling a story about a young woman who grew up in the church and later questions and struggles with it is relatable and so well told that as a girl who struggles with some of Gifty’s notion and ideas it doesn’t feel like I’m being mocked or ridiculed but in a storm of questions that will never be answered. I

I encourage everyone to read this. It’s consistent throughout. There’s really no build up or climax but the story is just a story of life, the pains that are inevitable, the loss of relationships from life itself or our wounds and gates pushing people away. It’s a story of acceptance and reflection. It’s genuinely beautifully written!

I'm a Christian with a Bachelor's in Biology. I felt this book was written for me. The language is beautiful. The plot is both intriguing and heartbreaking. I really enjoyed the commentary about a young, educated, Black woman both embracing her faith and questioning it. I "read," the unabridged audio version of this book. 4 stars instead of 5 just because I felt the book would have been perfect if it were a bit shorter. It just felt repetitive at some points. Still, I highly recommend it.

I find this book so hard to review because I was absolutely blown away by Homegoing and this is just an entirely different novel. The range of Yaa Gyasi’s writing is truly incomparable and that is clear from cover to cover. This was a beautifully painful story of the power of loss and the trajectory it forces on those left behind. The writing was beautiful, the characters were complex and I was incredibly impressed with the detail, particularly of Gifty’s research. I had high expectations for this book, following Homegoing, and that might have been unfair on my part, but this was still a beautiful book from beginning to end.

Beautifully written and descriptive. The story of this family's struggles is very moving.
