I feel like this is a bit overrated.
This horror novel did not live up to the heavy reputation it built on Tik Tok. The "character development" was extremely confused and rushed. Neither of the two love interests interacted with one another in a way that any real human being would. The graphic, gorey
imagery many readers bring up as the main selling point were all merely fantasies or dreams or stories being told through the characters. They aren't anything that actually happen to the characters. So, there isn't much meat or pay off. Essentially, very little happens.
It's a very easy read. I finished it in an hour or so, but it felt years longer than that. I was quite bored and uninspired through the whole thing. Eric Larocca doesn't have a great handle on how real people operate. The attitudes and thoughts from Agnes and Zoe were mostly silly and unconvincing. I can't think of a moment or chapter I honestly enjoyed or related to whatsoever.
In short, it's a bad book. The only compliments I ever see are about how graphic the story is, but not of the actual story itself...because it's terrible. Vapid. Extremely amateur, despite the author stating all the dark places he had to go to create this piece. It reads like an overconfident and inexperienced at life teenager wrote this.
