The Haunting Season
Siler House has stood silent beneath Savannah's moss-draped oaks for decades. Notoriously haunted, it has remained empty until college-bound Jess Perry and three of her peers gather to take part in a month-long study on the paranormal. Able to talk to ghosts, Jess quickly bonds with her fellow test subjects, who have their own "gifts." One is possessed. Another just wants to forget. The third is a guy who knows how to turn up the August heat, not to mention Jess's heart rate...when he's not resurrecting the dead.
The study soon turns into something far more sinister when they discover that Siler House and the dark forces within are determined to keep them forever. To escape, Jess and the others must open themselves up to the true horror of Siler House and channel the very evil that seeks to hold them in.

I really enjoyed these stories - I scare easily, but I also enjoy the spooky topics (ironic, I know). These stories weren't scary at all, more unsettling and mysterious, the best way I can think of describing them is Dickensian. I can't rate the book as a whole so I have rated each story separately and gave my overall 3* which is the average rating for them all.
Here are my mini-reviews of each story:
1. ***
'A Study in Black and White' by Bridget Collins
I didn't mind the ending at all (which I usually don't enjoy unless it's a happy one). The main character was insufferable.
2. ****
'Thwaite's Tenant' by Imogen Hermes Gowar
I'd love for this story to be a full novel. Ghosts are good if you're good person is a point of view I can definitely get on board with; you will only be hurt if you deserve it. Stanley was a little shit though.

'The Eel Singers' by Natasha Pulley
Weird. I wasn't very fond of writing style and often my thoughts were drifting off and I had to re-read the pages again. Not memorable at all except that the girl was autistic.

'Lily Wilt' by Jess Kidd
Deliciously unnerving. Boy meets girl except the girl is already... well, dead. A warning story not to mess with resurrecting the dead.
Nan has stomach of steel.

'The Chillingham Chair' by Laura Purcell
How dare you leave me on a cliffhanger!
6. ***
'The Hanging of the Greens' by Andrew Michael Hurley
It was ok. Pretty gruesome towards the end and definitely solidified my opinion about religious fanatics - avoid at all costs!

'Confinement' by Kiran Millwood-Hargrave
This one bored me to tears. It was pretty obvious none of the 'ghostly' bits of the story were real and it was all in her head.

'Monster' by Elizabeth Macneal
Very unsettling, a man's descent into madness. Again, it was made pretty obvious from the start that the boy was the Monster.

I’m just going to start off and say; I don’t watch scary/horror movies. I’m a wimp. I don’t typically read “scary” books either. The only series off the top of my head I can say I've read is EIT and that shit gave me nightmares for WEEKS. BUT. I participated in the Blitz! And after reading a few of the excerpt’s, I wanted to read this. Kill me know.
This review will be vague and rantish. And slightly spoilerish. FYI
This shit freaked me out. There’s a lot of chilling, creeping moments that made my heart race. The main culprits would be the LITTLE GIRLS. Because, not only are ghost just creepy and freaky anyway, you had to go and have them be kids. TWINS! *shudders* The whole mirror thing. I’m not even gonna touch that one. And the doll. OK. The doll was only there for ONE SCENE but that was ENOUGH.
Moving on.
The story follows four teens whovolunteer go and stay at a Haunted House in Savannah for some sort of paranormal experiment. All four have their own stories, different abilities and their own personal experiences with the paranormal. Regardless on how and why they all ended up there–they ultimately have the same goal; GET THE HELL OUTTA DODGE.
Things get crazy and freaky right from the start. Jess, one of the POV, was probably the only “Happy” teen to go to Siler House. She was obsessed with ghost and wanted closure regarding a few family members who had died. Gage, the other POV, who is a necromancer, actually knows A LOT more about their little experiment than anybody. Bryan, who can make things disappear seemed indifferent either way. THEN, we have Allison. I think I would DIE if she was my room-mate. She was a damaged girl, who I honestly thought was bat shit. But she was probably the smartest of the four.
There were a few times I wasn’t sure where the plot was going, because I was just as confused as our house mates. I like the concept of the agency and it was quite interesting. In my opinion, it’s something that’s likely to happen. Even after that little revelation though, that took a back seat too because they was just WAY more going on in and with that house.
We have a blooming romance as well. It was minimal with only a few scenes here and there. I like the two together. Especially after everything that happened. I was a little sad at the way everything turned out. And I wished there was a little more elaboration on WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED.
Overall~ Very chilling, haunting, keep-you-up-all-night freaky. If you’re a wimp, don’t read at night!
