The Christmas Bookshop: A Novel

The instant New York Times bestseller!

"Sublime...Colgan infuses her latest book with humor, wit, suspense and a perfectly cast love triangle."--USA Today

"The Christmas Bookshop is literary hot chocolate with a bourbon shot: hot, sweet but with a surprising emotional kick."--The Times (UK)

Perfect for the holidays! A brand-new heartwarming Christmas novel from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and Christmas at the Island Hotel.

Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia's perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life does not appeal.

Frankly, Sofia doesn't exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

Thrown rather suddenly into the inner workings of Mr. McCredie's ancient bookshop on the picturesque streets of historic Edinburgh, Carmen is intrigued despite herself. The store is dusty and disorganized but undeniably charming. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping? What will happen when a famous and charismatic author takes a sudden interest in the bookshop--and Carmen? And will the Christmas spirit be enough to help heal her fractured family?

A little recap and review: During today’s Christmas coffee book club meeting, we discussed the Christmas bookshop. The reviews scored between a two and a nine on a scale of 10. The themes of family, personal development /growth, and comparison were discussed. We saw that there were a lot of paradoxical characters (Pippa and Penelope, Carmen and Sophia, Blaire and Oke)… as well as characters that seemed to mirror one another (Carmen and Mr. McCreadie, Penelope and Sophia, Carmen and pippa). We loved watching how Carmen started out as a resentful and insecure character but grew into someone who is sure of themselves and who learned to appreciate family. The driving relationship in the book was between her and her sister, Sophia. We found that the love triangle kept us on our toes, though. We kept hoping that Blair would have redeeming character arc, and are glad that she ended up with oke. We did, however, feel that the relationship with Carmen and Oke felt rushed at the end and we would have loved to see more chemistry between them. Skylar was DEFINITELY the villain (IMO). We were all happy with the ending of the book and thought that the epilogue was so cute!!! Don’t forget to rate the book on a scale of 1-10 in our book club app and feel free to post your review. I am so excited to get going on The Holiday Swap for October.

The voice at the beginning is a little hard to listen to, but it's portraying the younger version of the books characters. After the story moves into the adult years it's much easier and the book progressively gets better and better as you listen or read.
