Tall, Dark & Dead
By Tate Hallaway
two to two and a half stars
The whimsical cover art promises a light humorous take on the vampire paranormal romance and this book delivers that for the most part. It goes to some very dark places but it is told in a snarky Sex in the City tone by the witty heroine. It was a pleasant enough breezy read but not worth continuing the series.

The story starts off with a promising first line “What’s the best way to keep the Vatican Witch hunters off your scent? Dress to kill.”
We are introduced to Garnet Lacy as she is dressing up as a poseur new age goth chick to hide in plain sight. As the first line indicates, she is running from witch hunters. She is also hosting the spirit of the Goddess Lilith. She has gone cold turkey on witch craft.
She meets Sebastian Von Traum, who is of course a vampire. They go on a sort of a date where she is trying to figure out what he is since he is out in the day and he reveals that he knows she is inhabited by Lilith.
When Sebastian comes under scrutiny of the witch hunters, they quickly fall into a relationship. Then she meets his dhamphyr son and discovers the boy’s mother is in a state of half death from an attempt to turn her into a vampire that for some reason didn’t work.
Even that wasn’t complicated enough, Garnet’s ex also a vampire shows up.

Sebastian is a day walker because he has concocted a formula that allows him to survive the sun, but when he misses his chance to renew the spell with a special ritual, it is up to Garnet to find a way to save him. Not much happens in the book really. It is mostly relationship drama. There is a little action involving the witch hunters but it is far from action packed.
The story climaxes as Garnet loses control of Lilith and is force to watch – and narrate – her actions as Lilith pretends to be her. In the final showdown she has to take bake her own body and use Lilith’s power to defeat the witch hunters. She does…sort of. Afterwards there is just one loose end to tie up. They must do the magic sex to heal her dying vampire boyfriend. Just another ordinary day in the life of Lilith possessed witch Garnet Lacy.
It was a pleasant enough breezy read but not worth continuing the series.
