Star Wars: Light of the Jedi (The High Republic) (Star Wars: The High Republic)

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Long before the First Order, before the Empire, before even The Phantom Menace . . . Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in The High Republic
It is a golden age. Intrepid hyperspace scouts expand the reach of the Republic to the furthest stars, worlds flourish under the benevolent leadership of the Senate, and peace reigns, enforced by the wisdom and strength of the renowned order of Force users known as the Jedi. With the Jedi at the height of their power, the free citizens of the galaxy are confident in their ability to weather any storm But the even brightest light can cast a shadow, and some storms defy any preparation. When a shocking catastrophe in hyperspace tears a ship to pieces, the flurry of shrapnel emerging from the disaster threatens an entire system. No sooner does the call for help go out than the Jedi race to the scene. The scope of the emergence, however, is enough to push even Jedi to their limit. As the sky breaks open and destruction rains down upon the peaceful alliance they helped to build, the Jedi must trust in the Force to see them through a day in which a single mistake could cost billions of lives. Even as the Jedi battle valiantly against calamity, something truly deadly grows beyond the boundary of the Republic. The hyperspace disaster is far more sinister than the Jedi could ever suspect. A threat hides in the darkness, far from the light of the age, and harbors a secret that could strike fear into even a Jedi's heart.

I’ve read the book from cover to cover and I agree with many who say there is no “there there” however, the story is solid. The characters are notable, and though I did question myself as to why I was reading the book. I never once thought it was not worth my time. Solid read.
Now that I've started Into the Dark I've gotten a better appreciation of what this book is and what it's trying to do. First I think I should mention that if you have read a lot of other Star Wars books this one can be a bit jarring for you as it is not a character driven story. Typically all of the books I've read thus far have centered on character's and a world that is already very established for fans of Star Wars allowing the book to instead focus on fleshing out the characters that we already love. This book takes the burden of setting up the plot, and world of this era. The first third or so of the book is very fast paced, exciting and keeps the reader entertained while the 2nd half is more about introducing key characters and setting up the villain. I also will add that this book was written very well so that even when characters that I hadn't had enough time with died or went through something traumatic I still felt something for them just due to the atmosphere that the author was able to create despite the lack of time or character development that they had. What made me want to come back and write a review now is that I've started Into the Dark I can say that the only reason that I am able to really delve into this character driven story is because of how well this book was able to set the tone of this era. Highly suggest you pick this up before starting the other High Republic books because it really sets the story up even if it isn't one of your favs its still an exciting read and a good time.
