I liked the idea of this one a lot more than the execution of it
the first three chapters were really interesting but honestly i was bored the rest of the time
This book certainly has a way of hooking into you and keeping you there. From the very first moment Zhu is introduced, her determination and resilience is palpable through the pages. For me, I was caught in between admiring her for her ability to do what was necessary for her, as all the male characters seem to do with no remorse for their actions, and feeling horror at how far she would go to get what she wanted. I think the book is an interesting look at the way sexuality and gender roles have so much of an impact on our lives and seem to matter so much, but in reality, it means nothing. Zhu is still able to accomplish all she sets out to do despite being a woman. Ouyang is still able to carry through with his vengeance despite not being a “full man”. The characters aren’t like able but you can’t hate them. There’s a desperation to each of them that begs for sympathy, even when they may not deserve it.
