This author was suggested by a member of the club. This is his second novel. It is set in a small town (pop 9000) within Sweden’s Arctic Circle in February. Temperatures drop to -31C and with his descriptive writing I could feel the bone chilling coldness. Tuva Moodyson is a young female, profoundly deaf reporter who has moved up from southern Sweden to work on the local weekly newspaper. The major employer in the town is a family run salt liquorice producer - apparently the second largest in the world. At the beginning of the book the male member of the family is seen climbing up a ladder attached to a tall factory chimney and falls to his death. Was it suicide or was it an accident? Tuva is commissioned to find out about the strange intensely private family, some of the strange workers, the very old fashioned manufacturing process. A Scandi-noir book of quality. Enjoyed it very much.
