Pumpkinheads

A 2020 Tayshas Reading List Selection
A 2020 Maverick Graphic Novel Reading List Selection

In Pumpkinheads, beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell and Eisner Award-winning artist Faith Erin Hicks have teamed up to create this tender and hilarious story about two irresistible teens discovering what it means to leave behind a place--and a person--with no regrets.

Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.

Every autumn, all through high school, they've worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they're reunited every September 1.

But this Halloween is different--Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.

Josiah's ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn't ready to let him. She's got a plan: What if--instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut--they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he's been mooning over for three years . . .

What if their last shift was an adventure?

I did not expect to like this book half as much as I did. I’d heard good things about it, but I haven’t loved Rainbow Rowell or Faith Erin Hicks generally, so I was planning on being disappointed. BUT, something about this book just worked for me. I loved the characters, I loved the setting (though let me say, you should read this one around Halloween— so many fall vibes) I loved the drama of it. If you want to read a quick, sweet, nostalgic book, definitely consider it.

As far as the story goes, I felt about it the way I have with anything I've read by Rainbow Rowell - lukewarm. I know she has a bajillion fans who adore her stories, so I don't feel too terrible about this...preference of mine. The art, however, was super adorable and all of the various stands at the pumpkin patch made me glad for it to finally be fall and extremely hungry. Pumpkin Bomb? Apple Cider Slushee? A S'more Pit? Caramel Apples? YES, YES, YES, AND YES, PLEASE.

I love a graphic novel, this is the third I've read this year!

Josiah and Deja work at a pumpkin patch every halloween season; but thus year is different, it is their last season before they head off to college.

Josiah really likes a girl called Marcey who works in the fudge shoppe. And every season he talks about her but he's never met her. Deja twists his arm to go and talk to her but when they go to the fudge shoppe she isn't there, she had been asked to go to another shop. When they get there she isn't there either.

The pair go on a wild goose chase to fine Marcey. Josiah eventually find her on a ride, when he speaks to her he realises she isn't the one for him. She doesn't like Halloween, she doesn't like pumpkins or anything Josiah does. It makes him realise who he actually likes, who he spends every season working with, who he cares most about.... Deja.

Josiah jumps out the ride and goes to find Deja. He finds her and then they kiss.

I really loved this Graphic Novel! It wad such a heartwarming story, the illustrations are great too.
