Playground

A hard-hitting and inspirational novel about the redemption of a bully from international icon 50 Cent

Thirteen-year-old Butterball takes readers on a journey through the moments that made him into the playground bully he is today. Loosely inspired by 50 Cent's own adolescence and written with his teenage son in mind, Playground received wide critical praise--and is now poised to become a perennial classic.

I was so excited to read this book since I heard it all over the book sides of social media.

I've read and heard so many reviewers talking about this little guy. As a fan of Mr. Beauregard, I had high hopes. I mean, who doesn't want to read about innocent children dying on a playground? There is gore, there is sex, there is everything you need in an extreme horror/splatterpunk story. But I think I went in thinking it was something slightly different.

Many reviewers claimed Playground was about one group of children who are joined by a group of bad seeds. That's not the case whatsoever. Two underprivileged families are offered a chance to come to the Borden mansion for the children to enjoy a brand-new playground. Geraldine Borden is insane. There is no other way to put it. She's absolutely disgusting. Her nazi protege, Fuchs, helped her design this dangerous playground. Her adopted son, Rock, is someone that you do feel sorry for. In the infamous scene where things happen between Rock and Geraldine, one would feel nothing but sympathy for Rock. Also, that scene is also misled by many reviewers. They claimed there was vomit that was used during the horrific sex scene, but it's not like that at all. He regurgitates a bit of stomach acid, and that's it. I was expecting Rock to barf all over Geraldine, but that's not what happened. The shit-eating scene was much more disgusting than the oral sex scene.

The children: yes, there is an asshole child that is trying to prove himself to his asshole father, but his siblings were pretty sweet. I never prayed so hard for the Bobby death scene. I was just happy that Greg saw all his sons die, though I was cheering CJ on because he was an absolute angel. After his death, Mr. Beauregard really drove it home with his plug of who CJ was in life.

All in all, this was a very fun novel. I enjoyed it. I wished I hadn't put too much stock into the reviews and went in blind, but what's done is done.

Holy f—. First of all, the shock value on this is a lot but that’s not why it gets 1 star. It gets 1 star because this is, in my opinion, some of the WORST writing I have ever read. The shock value was diminished by the bad writing. I can’t with the obscene amount of adjectives and alliteration that I would have to reread paragraphs to make sure I even knew what was going on. Less is more TW. Don’t read this book if you don’t like horror (slasher/splatter) or genuinely psychologically messed up things.

Horrid. Written completely for shock value. I read because of tiktok and I’m upset that I spent 11 hours of my life finishing it. Listen, I love everything horror. This just was not it.
