A new favorite for me!
It's a love story, both between lovers, family and country and self. It's a call to think twice about your own dreams and ambitions, and how you think and feel about the issues in your own life.
It's also a feminist kick ass book with a great main character who while at times lost, never stops dreaming and never stops going.
We’re so excited to bring you a brand new official “Bestie and A Book Book Review” today!
If you’re new here….what is Bestie and a Book? This book club was started by two long distance best friends who wanted to find a way to spend more time together. What better way than reading a good book and having one or two glasses of wine!
Each week we will dive deeper into the book of choice (while maybe also getting a little side tracked with discussing this weeks latest reality tv show drama).
Every month we pick a new book for our Bestie and a Book Book Club.
During the month, we break our book into manageable chapter sections and talk about those chapters via our podcast for anyone who would like to join us!
The May book of the month that we selected for our Podcast and Book Club was “Olga Dies Dreaming” by Xóchitl González.
Below is our unbiased and fully honest opinion.
We’d love to know your thoughts if you’ve read this book too!
“Olga Dies Dreaming” by Xóchitl González.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This story! Our second 5 star review!
We were absolutely moved by the way Xóchitl wrote this beautiful, interwoven story of two Puerto Rican-American siblings, Olga, a successful wedding planner, and Prieto, a popular congressman in Brooklyn, NY.
Olga was one of the most dynamic, intelligent, and clever characters we’ve met between pages.
On the daily, Olga’s work involves orchestrating love stories of the the elite. However, finding love of her own only comes into frame when she finally crosses paths with Matteo, a straight shooter who unlike anyone before him, forces her to confront the effects of long-held family secrets… and more.
This story touches upon the pursuit of the so-called “American dream,” gentrification, family and the relationships that shape us, all while beautifully coming back to the concept of pursuing what we think we’re supposed to want versus what will actually make us happy.
The layers, the questions of “what is the American Dream,” the concepts of equality, politics, activism, and identity are painted in this book like we’ve never seen before.
The thought and realization that this book is being made into a television show…coupled with the fact that Olga will be played by the one and only Aubrey Plaza was almost as riveting as the thought provoking story that resided within the confines of this book.
We highly recommend “Olga Dies Dreaming” and hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
