Looking back on reading this novel, I don't see pages filled with text; instead, the experience was much more like an evening at the theater. The descriptions are sensorially vivid, whether it's a terrifying storm, old floorboards scrubbed till they gleamed white, a dusty lot, a Thanksgiving 'possum, the lobby of a seamy small town hotel, or a Chicago street scene encounter. You see it, feel it, you smell it. Above all, you hear it. Extensive dialogue, much of it in a rural vernacular you might not have encountered since Jim and Huck headed down the Mississippi, establishes each character's personality and beliefs, history, strengths, and foibles. And you hear it in the music, old call response songs that are a dialogue unto themselves. And, not to spoil your evening at the theater, but Sandy speaks his final line like a Shakespearean aside to the audience. I hope you'll jump to your feet, as I did, applaud, and shout "I love this book!"
