Man, Fuck This House

With his "highly visual and cinematic worldbuilding" (Booklife by Publishers Weekly), Brian Asman spins a horrifying and imaginative tale of an ordinary family and their extraordinary new house...

Sabrina Haskins and her family have just moved into their dream home, a gorgeous Craftsman in the rapidly-growing Southwestern city of Jackson Hill. Sabrina's a bored and disillusioned homemaker, Hal a reverse mortgage salesman with a penchant for ill-timed sports analogies. Their two children, Damien and Michaela, are bright and precocious.

At first glance, the house is perfect. But things aren't what they seem.

Sabrina's hearing odd noises, seeing strange visions. Their neighbors are odd or absent. And Sabrina's already-fraught relationship with her son is about to be tested in a way no parent could ever imagine.

Because while the Haskins family might be the newest owners of 4596 James Circle, they're far from its only residents...

This is the story about your typical "family moves across the country for Dad's new job," complete with a cheesy 90s dad, a stay-at-home mom desperate for a fresh start, and two kids (one of which may or may not be demonic).

The house is big and beautiful, except that it's also alive - and has its own agenda. This was a creepy, fun, and quick read. I definitely did not see the ending coming and was the perfect way to begin the spooky season.

This was such a fun read. The only thing I hate about it is that I can’t go back and read it for the first time.

The title gives you an idea of what you're in for. Equal parts tongue-in-cheek (the creepy son is named Damien) and full of heart, this is a quick, bizarre read about a haunted house. While it pays homage to many of the tropes, it also manages to feel fresh. If you're looking for something both familiar and slightly different, this will scratch that itch.

So I have mixed feelings about this book, but most of them are good! Initially, I was drawn to the book because of the title and cover. Once I started reading, I was intrigued by the story. The mixed feelings come in with the writing; I had a really hard time with the writing. There were times it was so scattered that I had to re-read sections to make sure I didn't miss something. I also found several typos that took me out of the story. Speaking of the story, I really enjoyed it; I found it really gripping and poignant, especially as it pertained to motherhood and mental health. Add in the supernatural, spooky aspects and the story was good, I just wish the execution was better.

Ok I bought this book strictly based on the title. I mean, it is catchy! It is a horror story with a twist. I appreciate the author's creativity. I thought it was well written and entertaining. I wasn't crazy with how it ended, but overall, a good read!
