Much like other Fallada novels, Kleiner Mann - Was Nun? gives a grim picture of Germany during the interwar period. Unlike other books written from a political perspective, this novel shows the struggles of an average man and his new wife. Mr. Pinneberg is pushed into adulthood when his young impressionable girlfriend becomes pregnant. Nothing is easy as inflation creates very few opportunities for individuals in his job field and life brings more and more costs. Just when he should be happy starting his new life, external forces make it hard for his family to get by. Despite all the ups and downs, the Pinneberg family learns a valuable lesson: their problems and lack of money do not matter because they have each other.
