I've had Jordyn for a long time on my kindle, only just now getting around to it because well, it won the freebie poll. I was so excited to start this one, because there are rave reviews and I love a bad ass chick. Sadly, I was not a big fan.
Jordyn is a teenage girl with no memories of her past, living with her aunt and uncle and trained by an Arch Angel. In a world with Guides, Protectors and Daemons; she doesn't fit in to the mold with her peers. You got it, she is special. Although she loves to fight and is extremely good at it, she longs for answers to her past, and why she is the way she is. When she meets Emrys, a Soul Trader, she slowly starts to unravel the truth about her friends, family and her own life.
This is a fast paced, quick read but I was a little put off by several different aspects of the book. In the beginning, we get a feel for Jordyn, the other characters and world, but it was all put off when Emrys enters the picture, but then goes back action packed at the end. It didn't flow smoothly. And as interesting as world was, I felt like I was getting information fed to me in large doses. I also didn't appreciate the plot device to make Jordyn even more "extraordinary." Protectors are the ones that battle, i.e the males. The Guides, are their soul mates feel the emotions of others and can influence them. No wonder she is so bad ass. The other woman don't fight. *sigh*
As I've stated, I love bad ass chicks with snark and attitude. But Jordyn goes great lengths with it. I didn't find her amusing at all. She was cocky, irritating, immature and quite honestly, a brat. I understand the need to rebel, but again, she went great lengths with it. I also thought for someone who wanted to know so much about her past, she wasn't asking the right questions and she was pretty dense. Instead, she would bitch and complain about all the lies she knew they were hiding, verses actually doing something to find answers.
Emrys. A Soul Trader who just happens to show up after Jordyn takes out two Daemons on her own. Because, that's not obvious at all. I didn't really dislike him, per se, but I didn't like him either. There was no development to his character. Sure, he "intrigued" me because of his sudden appearance and interest in Jordyn, and he was quite mysterious but other than that? Eh, I just didn't care. The "romance" too, was immature, under developed and I just didn't care for it.
And the ending. It was way too abrupt and predictable.
Overall -
I was, obviously, not a fan. I hear great things about her other novels, so I will be checking those out but I will not be reading the sequel to this.
