Honest to goodness; Incarnate is probably my favorite Reincarnation novel. I haven’t read many but this far surpasses in originality, beauty and kick ass writing.
In a world with a million souls, all being reincarnated after they die, Ana is born. She’s a newsoul. Shunned and mistreated for being different, Ana sets off to the city, Heart, in search for answers. This is where she runs into some trouble and meets Sam.
This world is so vividly described and pictured I couldn't get enough. My head is still spinning from the complexity of the world building, mythical creatures and wanting to know MORE about this place called Heart and the millions of souls who reside there. It’s just AWESOME. I felt like Ana, trying and failing to comprehend living and remembering 5,000 years of life. Good, Bad you name it. One of the things I love most is that; even the residents have their own theories and such on WHY they were created. There are some explanations but also many unanswered questions to leave room for your own interpretation and room for explanations later. I actually applaud this because I think if everything were to be explained in full detail right off –in the first novel– our brains would fry from info dump.
Ana’s character is written remarkable well. Her actions are realistic. She was never quick to accept anything and was constantly on her guard. I hated seeing some of her reactions to things, like flinching, but it’s real. It’s how I would assume anyone would react in her situation. She is smart, funny and solely independent. Yes, she suffers from a sad and traumatic life, which makes it all the more beautiful watching her learn and grow and a person. Her love for music was beautifully expressed.
Although there is a lot to learn and discover about this world, the romance is such a large part. I loved watching the interactions between Ana and Sam, their discussions on life and death. Not only was it sweet, it was realistic and slow building. Ana is not quick to trust even though Sam has never given her a reason not to. I wasn’t wigged out by the age difference. After all, he is 5,000 years old.
Aside from all that; there is a little bit a mystery tied into Ana’s already mysterious creation. So there really is a lot take in and weave together throughout the novel. I found myself with TONS of questions at the end. About their existence, the walls with heartbeats (HOW FREAKIN COOL), Heart itself and about the creatures–hello DRAGONS!– and I can’t wait to dive into book two and learn more. Not to mention; after the events of one particular night, I am anxious to see who returns..
Overall- Such an awesome book. Beautiful, touching and just awesome! I highly recommend it!
