In the Fields isn't just a story, it's a journey. A journey about heartache, loss and love; and what a young girl with so much strength has to endure to pick up the pieces of her life and move forward.
Although I do read a lot of contemporary, I don't read a lot of more realistic & uncomfortable topics, until recently. Especially considering the themes in this one and how sensitive I am about the subject. But after reading a review that moved me, I immediately added this one to read. And while it was difficult for me to read on a personal level, I am so glad I did. This book is heartbreakingly beautiful.
This is one of those books where you have a lot to say but you can't capture the right words to describe it. I know my words will not do this justice on how good it is.
Caroline is such a sweet, innocent girl that I adored from that first page. She is good and full of love and had to endure so much it made my heart hurt. Her strength shows in everything she does. From her love for Isaiah, to the steps she had to take to take care of herself, when the people she relied on most failed her. She was struck with so much tragedy and loss but she always picked herself back up, even when she didn't want to. She is, without a doubt, one of the strongest main characters I have read in a long time.
I loved Caroline and Isaiah's relationship. Their love for each other just pours from the pages and fills your heart. They tried, so hard, to be together and shut out the hate and prejudice in their small town. Even during the times they weren't "together" they were never far from each others thoughts. It's a love that's admirable and strong. The other relationships too, were so beautiful. From Papa, Davis, Ruby and Grace. All the love is so heavy and poignant you can just feel it, deep down.
What made this difficult for me to read, what the strongest part of the writing. Willow does an amazing job with the realism of the situation. She doesn't sugar coat anything and throws it in your face, forcing you to see it. From a personal standpoint, it was more than difficult because of reasons I won't get into-- but I applaud her for it all the same.
My Peeve- Nothing. I love this book to pieces.
Overall- I loved it. In the Fields is heartbreaking, beautiful and amazing. A journey of two people, who love without reservations that deserve so much happiness; and a girl whose strength is one to admire. I highly recommend this.
