New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix takes on the haunted house in a thrilling new novel that explores the way your past--and your family--can haunt you like nothing else.

When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn't want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn't want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father's academic career and her mother's lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn't want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world.

Most of all, she doesn't want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success. Unfortunately, she'll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it'll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market.

But some houses don't want to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them...

Like his novels The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and The Final Girl Support Group, How to Sell a Haunted House is classic Hendrix: equal parts heartfelt and terrifying--a gripping new read from "the horror master" (USA Today).

It took a bit for me to read this once I realized puppets (dolls) where included. I hate dolls as much as clowns. If I had been reading this instead of listening to it, I would have put this int eh DNF pile because of the dolls. I should probably get over the doll thing, but I won't.

The writing was good. It took a bit to get going in my opinion, but there was a lot of good build up to the action of the story. About the last 25% of the book is where the action was & it was awesome. This book also made me realize I am so happy I have no known siblings as I am sure I would have this sort of relationship with them.

If this book ever gets turned into a movie, I hope that there isn't too much added to the movie to make up for the slow start & world building in the book. And I hope it's got good CGI.

To be honest, if this wasn’t a book club read I would have DNF’ed it instead of finished it. I read this for a thriller book club and overall, it did NOT give that impression though there were some weird and eerie moments for sure. The main characters Mark and Louise were not likable in the least. In fact, none of the characters really are. A tragedy brought them to the point they had to decide what to do with a family house and the items inside it. Mark acted like an entitled man child for a good majority of the book and Louise wasn’t much better. Both of these people are childish and quite frankly idiots. As I was reading, it got to a point my head felt like it wanted to explode because there felt like so much going on and it was difficult to figure out fact from fiction. If the author tried to set up an unreliable narrator situation, then I have to say it failed in my opinion. The explanation given for the events were definitely not what I expected, but at the same time it did not come together fast enough for it to make sense for me. I realize that fiction doesn’t always have to make sense, but it should be written in a way the reader can follow along and be able to understand what was happening. This book was a mess and not in the organized chaos way. I just don’t believe this book was for me and unfortunately, I would not recommend it to other readers. It wasn’t my type of thriller.

I love Grady Hendrix’s books & after MBFE I had great expectations for this one. But sadly it missed the mark for me. Felt forced & a little *too* out there, the plot just didn’t work for me. Still a fan & the writing was done very well, just too weird imo.
