I like it a lot better on a reread. I think it’s because when I first read this, I thought this was about worldwide myths for some reason, so my expectations soured the experience. I now appreciate it much more. The poetry and short story collection is divided into sections of Greek mythological figures: primordial beings, Titans, gods, monsters, and mortal heroes. A modern perspective naturally pervades the work, and the myths aren’t treated as sacrosanct. I liked this about the book, but it won’t be everybody’s cup of tea. Everything is easy to read, but the myths are allusions, not spelled out, so use Google as a refresher when needed. I think some readers will find the poems kind of Instagram-y: not much rhyme and rhythm, filled with feminist platitudes, and sound bite length. I don’t mind this, I actually love it. To each their own. 8/10 I really enjoyed this read, not everyone will.
