Good in Bed

Simply, an enjoyable, easy read (or listen if you get the audio).

Just finished this book I was buddy reading with my sister. So I accidentally read it before and completely forgot about it until picking it back up.

I half remembered the plot but like jk I remembered it wrongly! So yeah… I don’t love it. It’s not bad, just super dated? Ummm yeah?

I really wanted to like and identify with Cannie, but the farther I got into the story, the more I was annoyed by her. Although, I did sympathize with what happened toward the end, with the baby. Still, because of the long author biography at the beginning, it seemed like this book was more about Jennifer than about fictional Cannie.

It was obvious that this was Jennifer's daydream disguised as a novel. She claims that there wasn't a cliche fairytale ending- but what happens to Cannie, the average-Jane reporter dealing with a painful breakup? Her writing piece is accepted by Hollywood for movie rights. She becomes best buds with a glamorous actress. She goes to a swanky party and gets hit on by a heartthrob movie star (although that scene does have a humorous touch of reality to it. After Cannie agrees to ride in the actor's car with him, he passes out from assumed alcohol and drug use. She takes care of him, and is then rewarded- he leaves her his expensive car as a thank you gift!)

And by the end, she does get her Prince Charming, who had 'been there all along' but she was clueless to realize he had fallen for her, although all the signs were there to the reader. Most of the book is about Cannie despairing over her spoiled, immature ex.

There were funny parts, that was true. Weiner's tone and writing style was witty and charming, with a few laugh out loud lines. I liked the ironic twist in that Cannie had wanted so much to slim down, but only did so after being so depressed she went on long hikes through the city and stopped eating. When she became happy again, she put weight back on. It ended up being fine with her, because her new love saw her as beautiful all along. It seems that despite her whining about how 'fat' she was, she probably wasn't that heavy at all, and that was also annoying.

I am conflicted about this book. I'd recommend it for the funny parts, but after finishing I didn't want to spend any more time with whiny, self absorbed Cannie.

Fat girls are happy and have sex lives !!! What a revelation. Jennifer Weiner is witty, relatable and real. She is one hundred percent honest and does not think someone has to be a sample size to be considered attractive.
