A story about a middle child whose jealousy of her older sister growing up sets off a chain of events that irrevocably changes her family forever.
Now an adult, she's found an obsession with a jailed serial killer. After letters, calls, and visits, he's entrusted her with the most special mission - go to his hidden shack, find a key, and give it to The River Man.
This was gripping, wicked, gross, and incredibly imaginative. This story steeped in mountain lore did not let me go until it was done. And that ending will stay with me for a long time to come.

I picked this book up after being talked into it by a number of readers claiming how "disturbing" it is. It is definitely not for the faint of heart, that is for sure. However, I found that it is sadder than disturbing. It gives us a glimpse of what a tormented soul looks like in so many different ways. Lori, Pete, Edmund, and Abby were all suffering from their inner selves. Of course, you grow to hate the main character, but it's what happens to the others that make this book so troubling. Three out of the four were forced into incidents that should never cross the eyes of children.
I liked this but hated it at the same time. It can be a very painful read for anyone that has suffered through sexual assault or abuse.

This book was refreshing in a dark way. It's different from your heavy body horror gore. This was psychologically thrilling. The author really had a way to tell a story through such heavy and pressing topics that I couldn't praise this more. This is what psychological horror is about something to make you dig into the dark parts of humanity and leave you happy you're not in this story. 5/5 my fave psychologicall read this year.
