The cover aside, I think what piqued my interest was the mention of time. Time travel and manipulation is so fascinating, I knew I would fall in love with this book based on that alone. Luckily, there was so much more to love between the pages.

Kai is one of those feisty, stubborn characters that you almost instantly like. She's loyal, dedicated and smart - a little on the naive side of things, but that can be overlooked. Because I wasn't tight-knit with my sisters, close bonds between siblings always touches me. It's amazing to see (read) a character that would stop at nothing to protect and save their sibling. And Kai proves that. I also loved the complicated relationship with Avan - which is where her naivety comes in. There were things that were just plain obvious. Either she didn't see them because of her one track mind - or just didn't want to.

I feel like there were many things starting between these two. Some, more frustrating than others. For starters - due to Avan's "reputation," Kai was afraid to just be another warm body. There was also the matter of her guilt, and Avan felt as if there wasn't room for him. Still, as much as I wish things would have been different between these two from the get go, I am happy where the relationship went. And the ending!? *sigh*

The world building was confusing at times - between the caste system and back story. There were a few times I felt it was a little info- dumpy, and had to go back and re-read to full grasp it. Kai's "gift" too, was hard to grasp at first. You would think she could time travel - but that is not the case. She can manipulate it; slow it down, speed it up, etc. Where she came from, and how she has this "gift" was a mystery throughout the novel, not coming out until almost the very end. Hello plot twist.

Once things start to click, everything makes total sense and I feel in love with the world. The mythology was compelling. I felt a slight tickle of familiarity, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I was surprised over and over again, by the plot twists. I also really appreciate that Lori doesn't hold back.

My Peeve -

The only thing that really bothered me was the info-dump. It is poured heavily on you in the beginning, so I suggest you hang on. Once things pick up though - a lot more makes sense.

Overall -

OI adored it!  The ending isn't a cliff hanger, but it does make me long for the next book.

Recommend -

Absolutely!
