This was an exciting and eventful second installment of the Endling trilogy. I have been reading these books with my seven year-old who is probably a little on the young side (it is aimed at middle graders) - and it has provided many opportunities for the discussion of new vocabulary and some darker topics that he is not usually exposed to in the books we usually read. He is extremely fond of and invested in the main characters and followed the plot development with great anticipation and trepidation. In this second book, Applegate further develops the relationships between her main characters, and provides the reader with a larger insight into the other “governing species”. We also learn how the world they live in is affected by their leaders’ lust for power and for control of other species. We follow Byx the dairne closely as she continues to search for others of her kind. Adventure, friendship and some good and bad surprises will keep you on the edge of your seat.
